Old Age is a curse
Recently, I happened to meet a friend who had had house guests: an old couple. This is a very interesting relationship that I am going to describe. This lady and the old couple had met through her husband and they got along like a house on fire. During the few occasions they met, the lady was nice to the couple and the couple, especially the old woman was enamored by the lady.
It so happened that one day the old couple came calling and decided to stay longer than their usual one or two days.
My friend was aghast at this blatant intrusion of privacy. Was she running a guesthouse? How could anybody just walk into her house and stay for days altogether. She braced herself for some old-fashioned advising. As she thought, the old lady started bossing around and started throwing a tantrum left, right, and center. Do this, do that, etc. The lady started returning late at night. One night when she went with a friend for a couple of drinks, the old lady asked her, quite sternly, "why are you so late?" and to her husband, "Oh dear, you must keep a tight control over your wife". This kind of interference went on for sometime. The lady wished each day that they must leave as soon as possible. Somehow, one day the old lady announced that they would be leaving that evening. The lady and her husband sighed a sigh of relief.
Now, this, is a true incident. Another layer to this story is that the couple lives in a posh cottage in a retirement community. They are stinking rich and the kids live abroad. People around them claim that they are a pain to have. Our lady decided enough is enough. Her MIL gave her a small lecture about how she should have behaved and so on.
My take on this whole episode is this.
I believe, basis a lot of conversations and discussions, that old people are kind of selfish and firmly rooted to their beliefs and habits. They tend to be touchy and very finicky about everything, they refuse to let go and be nice to people around them, especially the next generation.
How much ever they try to but some older people tend to be very nasty to their near and dear ones and end up pushing them away forever. So is the case with these people. There is so much of pent up hatred and cunning. All they want to do is control and poke. Nobody can do anything better than them. They will belittle you and make you feel small, insult you. I think, for people like them, they deserve to be in an old age home. I am sure their children would have also let them go after trying to keep up with their hatred filled speeches.
There are other people who are just, normal. I would certainly like to be like the latter.
I will hope that one day, before their time is up, these people see the light of day and feel love, and are able to see sense in their mindless complaints. I will pray for them to leave this earth in a nice way.
